What are Omega-3 fatty acids?
Essential fatty acids are fats that our bodies can’t make on our own, so we need to acquire them from food. They play a number of roles in the body. Omega-3s:
· reduce inflammation
· build hormones
· regulate insulin
· regulate immune system
· increase metabolic rate for weight loss
· prevent heart disease
Unfortunately, most North Americans are deficient in essential fats because they consume a typical Western diet, which is high in processed foods and low in omega-3s.
Omega-3s for Clarity of Mind and Balanced Emotions
Our brain is composed of mostly fat – but don’t worry, it’s the good kind! DHA omega-3 fatty acids are the building blocks for more than 35% of our brain and also provide more receptors for serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter. One type of omega-3 fatty acid, called EPA, forms important building blocks for hormones that we need to feel balanced.
Low consumption of omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to an increase in depression and to other health problems such as PMS, cancer, obesity, heart disease among others.
To help feel the GLOW from the inside, include foods high in omega-3s in your diet from whole food sources such as flax, hemp, chia and pumpkin seeds or their oils.
Omega-3s for Beautiful GLOWing Skin
We know that beauty stems from the inside out, but we won’t complain about GLOWing on the outside, either. Omega-3 fatty acids also nourish your outer GLOW by providing structure to the cell membranes in your skin and regular consumption of them prevents premature aging, wrinkles and sunburns.
Omega-3s for Healthy Weight Maintenance
These healthy fats also play an important role in healthy weight maintenance because they stimulate thermogenesis, a process that produces heat and is a key component of our metabolism.
Essential fats are also the building blocks for the fluid part of the cell membrane that allows micronutrients to pass through and be absorbed. When you consume a diet that is low in omega-3sand high in saturated fats from animal sources, your cells form an impermeable membrane that prevents nutrients from passing through.
As a result, your body will signal hunger, even if you are already full, in an effort to receive the micronutrients you need to function normally. When you can better absorb nutrients, you will feel satiated with smaller amounts of food so it will become easier to maintain a healthy weight without dieting. Click here to learn more.
