And Oooohhh lalala, this article also contains a BONUS tip for how you can enjoy your favourite decadent flavours and bring out the natural GLOW of your skin ;-)
Tip #3 - Enjoy Healthy Fats
Fats, along with protein and fiber, help to slow the release of sugar into your blood so you are satiated for longer periods of time. Fat also triggers the release of a hormone called leptin which signals satiety to your brain.
For example, think of how you feel after eating a piece of plain bread vs eating a piece of bread with a nut butter? More satiated and your energy lasts longer. Right?
Yes I know fat has more calories, but incorporating healthy fat sources in moderation will assist to satiate you more quickly, balance your blood sugar and eat less - especially over the holidays when you are likely to eat more refined carbohydrates.
(Note - some people with obesity or metabolic syndrome have leptin resistance, in this case, I recommend working with a qualified health practitioner who can help you regulate your fat intake).
Food is More than Fuel
Keep in mind that, food does MUCH more than provide us with energy. Food provides our bodies with building blocks for every single cell of our body. Literally, the food that you eat (fat included) ends up as part of your brain, finger nails, neurons, heart, blood, bones, antibodies, muscles, HORMONES, BRAIN, SKIN and every single part of you. How incredible is that?
This means not all food (fat included) is meant to be burned off as energy. It is also needed to build the various parts of your physical body.
Fat is one of the most important building blocks for our brain, hormones and skin.
(Did you know? Your brain is 60% fat - mostly composed of DHA omega-3 fatty acids!)
This means that the type of fat we consume can affect how we feel, our clarity of mind and the quality of our skin.
Most treats (and yes most holiday items) like muffins, cookies, chocolates and chips all contain rancid (adulterated) fats such as canola oil, heated sunflower oil, hydrogenated fats, saturated fats from conventionally raised animals from sources such as milk and eggs. Click here to learn more about what fats are healthy and what ones are rancid.
Because rancid fats are unnatural, your body cannot use them as building blocks, instead most are stored as fat and become free radicals (aka toxins).
When you have a high level of free radical or toxins in your body either from rancid fats, preservatives or unnatural substances your body cannot recognize such as nutrient-less white sugar, flour and salt - your body will retain extra fat.
Why? Fat is protective and is your body will store extra fat around your organs to prevent damage from free radical toxins. This is why when people switch to a clean whole foods diet, even though they eat the same amount, they often lose weight.
You also don't have the right building blocks for your body to weave molecules together to create beautiful GLOWing skin, and healthy bright brain cells and happy hormones.
LOVE the GOOD Fats and GLOW
I personally LOVE cold-pressed hazelnut oil, and butter-ey smooth virgin coconut oil for their potent GLOW giving properties.
The Beauty of Cold-Pressed
The cold-pressed extraction method ensures the vitamin E naturally found in nuts and seeds, is kept in tact and not lost during processing, as is the case in most oil extracting methods. Vitamin E act as a natural preservative for the oil and is a potent antioxidant for your skin.
For the LOVE of Coconuts...
Besides being super extrafragalistic-delicious, research has shown that coconut oil converts into a hormone called pregnenolone that improves circulation to the skin to restore sagging skin and can be protective against stress. And as a medium-chained triglyceride, coconut oil can also assist with weight loss.
For the LOVE of Hazelnut Oil...
Hazelnuts are VERY high in beauty vitamin E. Because hazelnut oil is so good for your skin, it is most commonly found in skin care products. You can also deliciously nourish your skin from the inside-out and enjoy cold-pressed organic hazelnut oil.
To help you maintain your GLOW conveniently, I have included the highest quality fats into ALL my GLOW Collection pieces including cold-pressed organic hazelnut oil and coconut oil in GLOW Spot Raw Chocolate and GLOWBall Consciousness :-)

Bonus Tip for Extra GLOW this Holiday Season & Beyond
To bring out your natural GLOW, simply choose ingredients that are high in beauty nutrients that nourish your skin.
One of my favourite beauty nutrients is selenium.
Selenium is a part of potent nutritional antioxidant system, called the selenocysteine complex that has been shown to slow the biochemical aging process of tissue degeneration, or loss of youthful elasticity of the skin.
The challenge with selenium is that selenium levels in soil vary greatly from region to region and is lost during the processing and refining of grains, so it can be difficult to get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) in your everyday diet - especially if you enjoy a vegetarian or vegan diet as most sources are found in animal products. (Footnote 1)
Brazil Nuts are one of the richest sources of the elusive beauty mineral selenium. Selenium can also be found to a smaller amount pumpkin seeds and seafood such as shellfish and salmon. To get your RDA of selenium all you need is one Brazil nut per day
To simplify healthy eating for you - I have incorporated Brazil nuts as much as possible in the GLOW Collection. Snacks that contain Brazil nuts include GLOWBall Consciousness and The Bisecotti GLOW. Click here for GLOW Retailers in Vancouver, BC.
(Please note - I have not done a nutritional analysis to determine how much selenium is in GLOWBalls - I estimate that you can get close to your RDA from 1 or 2 GLOWBalls or Bisecotti pieces)
And Happy Holidays a la Fit, Fabulous GLOW and Delicious ;-)
